The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a rare and valuable breed with origins going back to the 16th-17th century. Within Africa’s history, Rhodesian Ridgebacks were successful in chasing and harassing lions until hunters could get there. Ridgebacks, recognized as a purebred breed by the American Kennel Club in 1955, have slowly increased in popularity, but they are still not a well-known breed. The clearly defined ridge of hair, which grows in the reverse direction to the rest of the coat along the dog’s back, is the characteristic feature of the Rhodesian Ridgeback. They are particularly athletic, loyal, and extremely devoted to their owners, displaying patience and protectiveness of children. Another feature of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is the need to be close which endears them as an esteemed member of the family unit.
